[eetjteb’s telegeams.] SYDNEY, August 24. Sympathetic. A crowded public meeting was held last night at the Masonic Hall, for the purpose of expressing sympathy with the persecuted Jews in Russia, and raising funds for their assistance. Resolutions were passed in accord with the object of the meeting, and a committee was formed to collect subscriptions. Over £IOOO wore subscribed in the room. Smallpox. No fresh cases of smallpox have been reported to the Board of Health to-day. One of the patients at the Quarantine Station, named Emerson, died of the disease at one o’clock this afternoon. BRISBANE, August 24. Legal. In the action Miles versus Mcßwraith, the plaintiff’s case was concluded last night, when defendant’s counsel applied for a nonsuit. The Judge, however, decided to allow the case to go to the jury. The trial has been resumed to-day, and the defendant’s case is now proceeding.
