On Chong, the Chinese merchant, at whose house in George street the first outbreak of smallpox occurred, has sent in a bill to the Government for £2OOO, for losses sustained through being placed in quarantine. It is stated that Doctors Clnne and Coffyn also intend, if necessary, to sue the Government for damages sustained through their detention in quarantine. The former gontlemaa, it is said, will claim £IO,OOO. BRISBANE, August 23. Serious Charge

The action, Miles versus Mcllwraith, the Premier of Queensland, to recover penalties from the latter for, having while a member of the Assembly, been interested in Government contracts, has commenced, and evidence has been partly beard. The defence alleges that the contract had terminated before Mr Mcllwraith took his seat in Parliament.
