THE WATER-SUPPLY SCHEME.

What has become of the scheme for supplying the city with water which was brought up some timo ago ? It was understood that, considering the urgout necessity that exists for an improvement in our wator supply for firo-preveution purposes, the Council would take the earliest possible opportunity to lay beforo the ratepayers, for their approval or otherwise, the scheme The weeks are rapidly rolling by, and yet nothing is done. A fire breaking out in any of the thickly-populated portions of our suburbs, remote from tho centre, would do an infinite amount of damage, and would be practically uncontrollable. Again, the citizens as a wholo aro being made to pay—through a combination—very exorbitant rates of insurance, which would per force be reduced considerably so soon as a scheme for supply of water is perfected. Why, therofore, tho Council should delay in obtaining—as we believe they would tho consent of the ratepayers, wo aro at a loss to imagine. The details of tho scheme have been made public, and seem to meet with pretty general acceptance. Therefore, as no opposition is to be anticipated, the sooner the scheme is brought to a practical issue the better. We say no opposition, because though it is possible that some of tho well-known noisy platform orators will desire to air their eloquence, they will have but little weight, considering that in nearly ovory instance they do not possess any property whatever. We must have a water supply, and the scheme propounded seems on tho face of it to be both feasible and effective. Therefore let us put it in hand as speedily as possible.
