There was a numerous attendance. Tender AcceptedMr J. O. Coate’s tender of £2625 for laying the permanent way at the Waipara station has been accepted. The New DockThe Chamber of Commerce has received a telegram that the deputation re the dock has been [entirely successful. The endowment asked for has been grunted, and Government will introduce a Bill this session constituting a dock trust with borrowing powers. A Solution. The St. Kilda baby mystery hes been solved by the police. It appears that the father, taking an aversion to the child, had it placed with some relatives at Milton, who fearing improper motives being attributed, sent it home. Then the parents brought it to Dunedin, and left it whore it was found. The police have requested the parents to take the child back. WELLINGTON. August 16. Attempted SuicideA young man, named James Jansen, attempted suicide yesterday afternoon by shooting himself with a toy cannon. He had been out of employment some time. SmugglingHiram Cowan, steward of the barque Langstone, hat been charged with smuggling a roll of silk. The Customs sue for a penalty of £IOO. The case will be heard this afternoon. It is not yet decided whether Mount Somers or Oamaru stone will be used.
