Ladies’ Bath AccommodationA petition has been forwarded by the ladies to the City Council, praying for the opening of the city baths for them on (Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Scholastic. The Education Board has yielded their intention about consulting school committees re the appointment of teachers, by writing to the Auckland city school committee to confer with them respecting filling up present vacancies in the city schools. AntiquarianMr T. Mackelvie, of London, has shipped seventy volumes of works relating to the early history of the colony per Loch Tay, and a case of antiquities, as a donation to the Auckland Institute.
Wreck at the Fiji. The schooner Albatross, which arrived this morning from the Islands, reports the wreck of the Auckland built brigantine Meg Merrilies. She left Suva for Levuka in command of Captain Hughes, and when beating along the reef outside the former harbor, missed stays and went ashore. She was washed high and dry, and the hands were engaged in dismantling her when the Albatross left. Complaining Again. The Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce has telegraphed to the Premier and some Auckland members re the unfair representation of Auckland in the direct steam service committee, also urging the passing of a Rebate Act. A special meeting is to be held on Tuesday re the omission of the Government to place a sum on the estimates for the completion of the railway terminus reclamation. Public feeling is exercised on the matter. WELLINGTON, August 12. The New Dock. The reply of the Government re the Port Chalmers dock has been deferred until tomorrow. The Mail Steamer. The City of New York, with the London mails of the 14th ultimo, left San Francisco for Auckland on Sunday, July 31st, one day late. The Zoalandia, with the July colonial mails, arrived at San Francisco on the Bth instant, being three days earlier than timetable date. Fire. Mr Georgs Bowles’ stables and two cartsheds at Carterton were burnt last night, also a quantity of hay, oats and other produce. The building was insured for £SO in the New Zealand office. Smuggling. A seizur® of 301 b of tobacco was made today on board the brig Neptune, a collier. TIMARTT, August 12. New Woollen Mill. Great interest is being taken in the proposed woollen factory at Timaru. The prospectus will be issued in a few days.
