EDUCATION BOARD.
The usual bi-monthly meeting of the Edution Board of the district of North Canterbury was held yesterday afternoon, at three o’clock. Present —Mr Inglis, chairman, Messrs Peryman, Cunningham, Booth, Tancred, Webb, Kev. Ohas. Fraser. A deputation from the Oarleton school committee waited on the Board with a request that the Board would sanction certain extra expenditure for repairs incurred by the committee without the authority of the Board. The Board promised to consider the matter, and it was afterwards resolved to grant the expenditure asked for on the strength of the explanation offered by the deputation. The Eev. H. O. M. Watson and Mr
Thomson waited on the Board as a deputation from the East Christchurch school committee, in reference to the appointment of Mr Just to the second mastership of the Main School. They informed the Board that Mr Just had produced testimonials as to his competency for the position. The question of the salary of Mr Austin, of the Biugaland school, was also introduced, the deputation pointing out he was not receiving the same remuneration as his predecessor. Mr Watson brought up another matter, namely, the fact that the mistress of the infant school had suffered a reduction in her salary owing to the falling off in the average attendance, and it was pointed out that whereas such decrease was owing to the mistress sending 180 children to the higher school, there was little encouragement for her to bring the children forward if her salary was to be lowered. —The Board promised to consider the matters, and the deputation, after expressing their thanks, withdrew. Subsequently, in considering the matters submitted, it was resolved to sanction the appointment of Mr Just, subject to his gaining certificate in Glass D at the examination in January next. The salary of the master at Bingsland was fixed at £IBO per annum, and the secretary was instructed to enquire into the statement regarding the decrease in the payment of the infant mistress. A deputation, representing residents of Broughton, waited on the Board to urge the necessity of erecting a school in the district. The Board advised the deputation to make enquiry with the view of ascertaining what pecuniary support might be expected from the inhabitants. Until thia was done the Board could give no definite assurance. Mr Watkins reported on the late musical examination of teachers, enclosing the names of those who had passed, and suggesting that certain teachers should receive the customary bonus on passing in January next. The report was approved. A letter from the Ashburton school committee, forwarding certain resolutions affecting the conduct of the school, which were passed at a recent meeting, and have already been published. The Board decided that the headmaster be relieved of his duties at the end of the year. The question of additions to the Lobnrn school was left in the hands of the committee. Tenders were received for work atWakanui, and that of Mr Taylor (£483) was accepted. A number of routine matters were then dealt with, after which the Board went into committee, and on resuming adjourned.
