[PEB PBESO ASSOCIATION.! AUCKLAND, August 4, The Black MonarchTawhaio returned from Mercer to Ngaruawahia to-day, the chances of a visit to Auckland being thus abandoned. On the journey, a Maori boy, one of Tawhaio’s followers, attempted to jump from the train and was cut to pieces. Tawhaio actively exerted himself to allay the excitement caused by the accident among his followers. NAPIEE, August 4, Boys and Fire ArmsAn inquest was held this afternoon on the body of a boy named Cross, who was shot by his brother. The latter picked up a gun, supposed to be unloaded, and put a cap on. It immediately exploded, and the ramrod, which was in the barrel, entered the other boy’s back. The lad died at the hospital, whither he was removed. A verdict was returned of “ Accidental death.” Poultry Show. The Poultry and Canary Association’s show, held to-day, was a great success. The exhibits were not so numerous as at previous years, but the quality was far superior. New Journal. The first number of a new [journal, called “The Schoolmaster,” was issued to-day. WE LLI NO-TON, August 4, FootballAt a meeting of the Eugby Union committee it was decided to postpone all football matches arranged to be played in Wellington with the other provinces. This stop has been rendered necessary owing to the ground being under repair.
Lucky EscapeThe barque Sophia Luhrs arrived from Newcastle this afternoon. She left on July 23rd, and on the first day out Captain Patou was sitting on the house aft when a heavy sea broke on board, washing him off on to the deck, where he was greatly knocked about, and narrowly escaped being washed overboard. The injuries which the captain received consist of a fracture of the skull, a broken nose, and one of his eyes is in such a state that it is not known yet whether he will recover bis sight. In a letter received from Mr Oonway re the visit of the professional cricketers he says that the tour of New Zealand will begin probably early in January, in the South. Sale of Mata Mr Hazlett, of Dunedin, has purchased Mata for £7OO. An Awkward Fix. Advice has been received here that the Rev. Father Larkin has been committed for trial for manslaughter at Honolulu. He had devised a school, which fell in course of construction, killing a K .uika boy. In Re the Calico Duties. In reply to a telegram sent by the chairman of the Chamber ot Commerce yesterday, the following from the Colonial Secretary has been received : —“ Regret that the law does not allow of your suggestion being carried out, and I am informed by the Customs that it cannot be done.” SportingThe following alterations in the programme for the February meeting of the D. J.O. have been agreed on. The City Stakes Handicap, first day, has been altered from a mile and a distance for two and three-year-olds to five furlongs for two-year-olds only ; the D.J.O. Handicap, second day, will be handicapped after the first day’s racing. The Queen’s Plate, weight for age, has been altered from £B3 to £l2O.
