[Br Thmobaph.] (Per s.b. Arawata, at Auckland.) LONDON, July 23. It is expected that the landlords will not oppose the advantages to be gained by reduced rents. Cork laborers are organising a strike. In Kentucky a fast day has been proclaimed for the purpose of praying for the reoovery cf President Garfield.
The clause in the Ir'sh Land Bill relating to immigration has been passed by the committee of the House of Commons.*
The American people have subscribed £50,000 (? dollars) for presentation to Mrs Garfield, wife of the President, as a manifestation of sympathy with her in tbe painful position in which she has been pliced by the oruel attack upon her husband. The Jews are resisting the attempt to expel them from Bussia. Many of their houses have been pillaged. In the struggle which resulted in the capture of Sfax by the Frenob, the number of killed and wounded natives was much larger than first supposed. It has been ascertained that 400 Arabs were killed and 800 wounded. The loss of the French was small. A great sensation has been created by an Irishman named Heckie threatening, in London, to murder the Bight Hon. W. E. Forster, Secretary of State for Ireland. Heokie was arrested and brought up at Bow street Police Office, and after a preliminary examination was remanded. The Ecumenical Conference in connection with the Wesleyan Methodist body has commenced its sittings in London. The Bev. George Osborne, D.D., was elected president. July 24. Much indignation has been expressed concerning the cowardly threats made against Mr Forster, Chief Secretary for Ireland. Stringent precautionary measures have been adopted. A serious fire occurred at Oavan, and is attributed to Bibbonmen. They murdered a man named Lynoh. During the present year 261,000 emigrants landed in New York from the United Kingdom. The strike of Irish laborers > sprer ling. The English rifle team won the Elcho shield this year at Wimbledon. Numerous agrarian outrages have ocsurred in Donegal. Fifty Land Leaguers have been imprisoned for resisting and agitat-'ng. The census returns for Germany show a population of 45,000,000.
