DETERMINED SUICIDE.

I A most determined case of suicide wss made known this morning, the victim being Geoffrey Williams, son-in-law of Mr James Gapes, Mayor of Ohristohuroh. The news of the tragio event soon spread through the town. The following partior'ars were obtained at the police depot:—A newspaper runner named Ernest Davies had occasion to go to Mr White's old forge in Victoria street, part of which ho used as a stable, and on entering the building saw a man (the deceased) lying under a benoh. Thinking the man was asleep he approached to raise him, and then discovered that he was in the presence of the dead. Further investigation showed that deoeased's head was slightly above the floor, being suspended from a cross-beam in the benoh by a piece of rope. Information was at once conveyed to the police, and Sergeant Wilson was soon on the spot, and, having cut the body loose, had it removed to the public morgue. It will be seen that the suicide was of the most determined character. The space between the benoh and the floor was too small to admit of anything approaching a "drop," so that the unfortunate man must have hanged himself by sheer foroe. The head was very much swollen and disfigured. Jn one of the pookets was found a table-knife newly ground, and with an edge like a razor, another instance of the deliberate nature of deed. An inquest will be held.
