J.P.’s.J Dbtjnkbnnesb.—For first offences, two men were each fined sj.

Illegally on Premises. —James Donaldson was charged with being illegally on the premises of his wife, who had obtained, the day before, a protection order and a'separate maintenance. The evidence was to the effect that he had been annoying his wife late at night, on the pretence of getting his things away. The Bench ordered a constable to be sent with him for this purpose, and warned him that further misbehaviour would bring severe punishment on him. Ho was then discharged. Larceny and Assault.—Henry Petersen was brought up for the fourth time on remand, charged with having on July 18th, on the South Town belt, attacked Gordon Anderson with a billhook, having intent to do grievous bodily harm. He had previously stolen from the premises of F, J, Stevens the weapon with which he committed the assault, and also a pair of boy’s trousers and vest from the bouse of Ellen Austin. The evidence, which 'showed that a most unproyoked and savage assault had been committed, and which proved the thefts, had been given on his first hearing, and as he appeared to be insane from the effects of drink, he had been sent to Lyttelton Gaol for a period of medical treatment. He had afterwards been remanded from time to time on account of the absence from illness of one of the Justices who heard the case. The prisoner now appeared to be in his right mind, and said he was not aware of having done anything wrong. He was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment with hard labor for the ass-mlt, and for stealing the clothes fourteen days’ imprisonment, the Bench stating that the period he hud already spent in gaol was taken into account in the light punishment they inflicted. The charge for stealing the hi l !- hook was dismissed.
