KAIKOUKA.

[FBOM THB OWB- OOKHBSrOMUBNT OF TEE " FEBSS."J Since last I wrote there have been all kinds of weather here. There is no place, I should think, equal to Kaikoura for variety, and it ia not possible to be in a state of quiescence forany length of time. There has been a slight! shock of earthquake, the remnants of a tidal wave felt on the north side of Half-moon Bay, but no material damage was done. Thoße on board a steamer passing theught she had grounded, but discovered that it was oniy a slight shock of earthquake. Then the wind has been very high. It comes tearing through these gorges as through a funnel. A man informed me that he had ten tons of hay carried away in about five minutes, and another tb.Lt his roof was carried away. I expressed astonishment, and he said he had his house double-roofed, and it carried away rafters as well. Since then he has had it shingled. Ifc has been raining from the B.W. for the last nine days. We cannot either send letters or receive them, as the mailman came baok with the mails and said that the Conway river was impassable, and no steamer has called either from North or South, as the sea has been very rough. Those lettere that have been posted have remained at the post office for the week past. There seems no chance of it clearing, from the glues and the appearance of the atmosphere. The barometer stands at 29 30, and during all the storm, with very slight variation, strange to say, it has remained there. The weather on the ranges must be bitterly cold, A shepherd was out mustering, and got some distance, and was not able to return. Night coming on compelled him to stay where he was, and he found that he was on the edge of a precipice. Had he attempted to move he most likely would have been dashed to pieces. One dog managed to crawl up to him, and helped to warm him by lying in his lap. The other in attempting to get to him was killed by falling over the chasm. Early next morning searchers were out for bim, but_ he managed to get home before discovery in a pitiable condition from exposure. The Road Board election for the suburban subdivision resulted as follows, vir : Mr W. D. Smith, 51; Mr J. Harnett, sen.. 29; town subdivision—Mr Maxton, 20; Mr Arh;-, 5. Messrs W. D. Smith and Mr 8. W. M*xton were declared duly elected. Mr Smith returned thanks for the confidence reposed in him by the ratepayers, and promised to do his best for the district.

Mount Fyffe is three-parts covered witJS snow, and looks very imposing. The Kaikoura ploughing matches will be revived by the holding of the first contest of the new series in the paddock of Mr John Reoples, Kaifeoura suburban, on Wednesdry, 17th August, when liberal prizes yet to be arranged will be given for the following events : Class A, double-furrow ploughs ; Class B, single furrow swing ; Class C, single wheel; Class and Juniors (under six years), single furrow, swing or wheel ploughs. The judges are —Messrs Q-. Taylor, W. L&wson and Jas. Parsons. A dinner will be given in the evening.
