THE LOSS OF THE MAGGIE PATERSON.

TPBESS ASSOCIATION TBIiBGKAM.] WELLINGTON", July 23. A report has been furnished by Captain Patereon, maßter of the' schooner Maggie Pateraon, now lying stranded at the Heads, as to the circumstances under which the vessel went ashore. He reports having enoountered a terrific B.E. gale in the straits on the forenoon of the 19th, during which he split some of his sails, and subsequently bore up for Port Underwood. The weather was very thick aud dirty. The wind then shifted to the westward, and blew from all quarters. At 8 p.m. tho vessel was within a mile of the entrance to Wellington harbor, the wind being too strong to lend in with, and the sea too heavy from the B.E. After shipping a tremendous sea he stood off at 10 p.m. The wind chopped into the S.E. again, and blew with great violence, Pencarrow light being in right bearing about N.N.E. Ban for it, when it came on thick with rain and squalls, which obscured the light. The mate and all hands were told to keep a sharp look out for breakers. Shortly after tho mate, who was standing forward, sang cut "Port," seeing a rock, which he mistook for the south end of Barrett's reef, and immediately after the vessel struck on the rocks, and finally stranded on the beach. A telegram received to-day from the pilot station states that the veaoel is breaking up. The southerly gale, accompanied with rain, is still blowing.
