[PEE PKSSS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, July 8. The Smallpox ScareThe New Zealand Government have determined that all vessels arriving from Chinese porta shall be quarantined. A proclamation to this effect will be issued immediately. It has been shown that vessels arriving at New South Wales from Chinese ports have brought smallpox patients with them, and the Government in that oolony have decided to quarantine vessels arriving from China. ASHBURTON, July 8. The Alleged Arson Case. To-day, before N. Wood, Esq., E.M., there was a crowded Court to listen to the evidence in the case of Buxton, the tailor, Mrs Buxton and her sister, Miss Buckman, who were charged with setting fire to insured wooden premises and tailoring stock. Inspeotor Pender, Sergeant Folton, the female searoher, and Constable Neill gave evidence, and a large quantity of Btook and jewellery was produced in Court. The case is likely to be prolonged. The Tariff Changes. £8383 has been paid as Customs duty, probably in anticipation of the tariff changes, as the amonnt is the heaviest of the year. INVEROABGILL, July 8. The General Election. Private persons have been active in enrolling voters for the new general election. Since the main rolls were issued, supplementary rolls, bearing two hundred names each, have been printed for Wallace and Biverton. The Invercargill Registration Officer has 300 additional names. Tararua Relief Committee. The Town Council last night voted half the expense of the Tararua Relief Committee. A remark was made by a councillor that the Union Company should have paid it.
