SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of this body was held in the Council Ohamber at 7 o'clook last evening. Present—His Worship the Mayor and all the Councillors. Or. White asked the position of the Ojwjncil in the matter of collecting the promised! mbscriptions towards the cost of erecting the Madras street footbridge. The Mayor replied that the Sydenham Kite collector would attend to the matter. Mr W. Neighbours wrote, offering tc supply glazed stoneware pipes of washed clay, to which tho first prize of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association'* shows of 1879 and 1880 had been awarded. Tho letter was received. The Chairman of the Tramway Oompany wrote, forwarding a printed copy of the bylaws of the company, and notice of additions to same re overcrowding tramcars. Ordered to be received. Mr F. Back, traffic manager, wrote stating that orders had been given to suspend shunting if possible when tramcars were approaching, but that it was impossible to delay trains arriving or departing from the station, and promising that he would confer with the Tramway Company's traffic manager with a view to prevent their arrangements clashing. Or. Joyoe moved, and it was agreed to—- " That the letter be acknowledged with thanks." He would suggest that Mr Back be respectfully asked if the shunting could not be carried on at tho eastern side of the station instead of Colombo road. Mr G. L. Lee, registrar of electors for the Ohristchurch district, wrote in reply that since September Ist, be had registered forty-four claims, and had on hand about 150 names taken from the jury list and other sources, bat he was not possessed of sufficient information to place same on the electoral roll. Ordered to be received with thanks. On the motion of Or. Joyce, the names of Ors. White, Langdon, and Forrester were added to the registration of electors committee. A letter was next read from Mr J. H. Baker, ohief surveyor, asking for the names of the streets in the borough, to be placed on the standard survey. The letter was referred to the works committee. The secretary to the Drainage Board wrote forwarding a plan of the district, as subdivided at the last meeting of the Board for rating purposes, and asking that the Oounoil would undertake the subdivision of the rate roll, and also the olleotion of the rates, and upon what terms. The letter was referred to the works committee, A copy of the Fire Prevention Bill was laid on the table, the Mayor remarking that considerable feeling was rife in Sydenham against it. The receipt of the Bill was acknowledged with thanks. Mr John Anderson wrote stating that he could not undertake to mako any other kind of lamp-post than those on view in his yard. After some disoussion, the letter was referred to the works committee, with power to act, and to procure lamp-posts at Mr Anderson's risk. Messrs Garriok and Oowlishaw wrote forwarding deed of concession for the Lincoln road and Ferry road tramway lines. The deed was referred to the committoe appointed to deal with the Bame.

Mr E G-. Wright, M.H R., telegraphed that ho was working in the House to get Sydenham represented on the Harbor Board, and asking who was protecting the interests of the boroug a in the matter. Cr. Joyce moved, Or. White seconded, and it was resolved —"That the thanks of the Council be sent to Mr Wright for his promised action, and that Messrs Richardaon, Fisher, Stevens and Andrews be respectfully requested to assist in procuring the above representation." The works committee reported:—That the ratepayers in Faraday street had handed in the deed dedicating the street, and that the same would be put in proper repair, when their contributions were paid to the Council. That the formation of the footpath on the eastern side of Wilson's road was contingent on the Heathoote Eoad Board paying the oost of same. Tha*. certain narrow streets in R.B. 71 be recognised as publio streets, as thoy were laid out prior to the formation of the borough. That the Registrar of Deeds bo asked not to register title referring to lands abutting upon new streets in Sydenham, until the Borough Council Bhall have approved of same. That instructions hud been given to place bridges over the side channels at the stroet crossings. That the engineer of the Drainage Board be informed if new sumps are necessary on the South Belt they should bo put in by the Board at its expense. The report was received and adopted. The lighting oommittce reported : —That the Council be advised to pay ono-fourth of the cost of the lamp on the Lincoln road, as vide letter of the Riccarton Road Board. That Mr Anderson's contract for lamp posts expired on May 31st, and ho had been advised to that effect. The report wbb received and adopted. The finance committee reported the receipts of the past fortnight to be £IOB 15s 4a, expenditure £204 16s Od, credit balance at Bank £924 Gj 10a. The report was received and adopted. The corsideration of the return of receipts and expenditure in the different w«rds was ordered to stand over for a fortnight. It was resolved —"That Mr Andrews, M.H.R., be requested lo ask the Minister for Public Works the following questions—(l) Are the railway servants in Canterbury compelled to work at stcck-taking on Sabbathdays ? (2) Are the railway porters of Can terbury required to work eleven or twelve hours out of every twenty-four, and receive pay as if thoy only worked eight hours a day ? " It was resolved on the motion of Cr. White, —" That the town clerk be instructed to prepare a list of all the private streets in the borough which the Council have agreed to recognise as publio streets, and that the works committee be requested to revise the list with i a view to the Council taking the legal steps necessary to make the said streets public. 1 '
