A Mad ChinamanA Chinaman haa been found in a cave near Onehunga in a state of lunacy. He was missed by his countrymen for some time, and was thought by them to be murdered. The Mails. The Hawea does not leave with the Southern San Francisco mails till to-morrow morning. French Acquisitions. The schooner Lilian arrived from the Islands, and reports that the Frenoh have taken Baitatea and Rata Islands, and also intend to take Borabora and Huahine. An English man-of-war was lying at Tahiti when the Frenoh vessel left to take possession. The Government of Huahine and Borabora say they will cot hand ovei their islands to the Frenoh. StockAt a meeting of the Auckland Stud Company, the report stated that during the year commodious buildings were erected on the estate. In view of the expenditure incurred, and the necessity for larger accommodation, the directors deemed it prudent to cancel the lease and purchase the Glen Orchard estate. The balance-sheet showed that the year's operations had produced a net profit of £4605, whioh, with the profits of the preceding year, viz., £1353, made a total profit of £5958. A dividend of 12J per cent, was deolared. The manager's report stated that the company's blood stock consisted of three entires, two mares, and ten young stock ; and of twenty-nine Clydesdales, viz., two entires, twelve mares, and fifteen yonng stook. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. Messrs J. M. Clark, T. Morrin, and Major Walmsley were re-eleoted directors. The Corrected Gospel. Copies of the revised New Testament arrived by the mail. WELLINGTON, June 27. Frozen MeatThe sub committee recently appointed to obtain information in reference to the export of frozsn meat met at the Parliamentary buildings on Saturday. It was stated that a capital of £IO,OOO would be required to start a company in Wellington ; that the New Zealand Loan Company had taken a contract to deliver 8000 sheep in England at 6d per lb; that Messrs F. Anderson and Co.. of London, had entered into a contraot to deliver meat from Yiotoria at 2d per lb ; that the estimated number of sheep available for consumption in the oolony would be one million, and but for the rabbit pest would be two and a half millions, and finally, that if it was found necessary to establish a line of steamers it would probably require a dozen at a cost of £120,000 to £150,000 each. Sudden Death. Mr Joseph Ballinger, plumber, died suddenly to-day. He was riding in the tram, when he was seized with a fit and expired. He was sixty years of age. Operatio. The opera " Pirates of Penzance," under the management of Mr B. W. Cary, was played at the Theatre this evening, for the first time in New Zealand. There was a crowded house, and the performance was most successful. After a season of twelve nights Mr Cary intends to travel the oolony. HOKITIKA, June 27. Mr Proudfoot having finished his BivertonOrepuki railway contract, has shipped the workmen and plant off to his works in New South Wales. Winding Dp. At a meeting of shareholders in tho Titanio Iron Sand Company here to-night, it was resolved to sell the Taranaki freehold of 500 acres for £3OOO, and to wind-up tho company.
