'.The Annie Hill, brigantme, from the Bluff, arrived tbis morning. The Union Steamship Company's s s. Wanaka arrived on Saturday morning from Manukau and way ports. She left the same night for Wellington, Picton, and Nelson. The iron barque Sarah Scott has arrived from Adelaide and Boston at Port Chalmers, with about 500 tons of American cargo, after discharging which she will come on to this port to load, as advertised, for the United Kingdom, in Messrs P. Cunningham and Co.'s and Boyse, Stead and Co.'s line of grain vessels. The Wellington " Times " learns that Mr David Mills, the Wellington manager of the Union Company's business, is to be transferred to the head office of the company at Dunedin, and will be succeeded by Mr Wheeler. Mr Mills waa manager of the Lyttelton branch for a considerabla time, and any promotion he may receive in the company's service will be a source of pleasure to hia numerous friends, both in Lyttelton and here. The captain of the barque Craig Ard, now in port, suggests that the code called the lonl code, and used for intercolonial and coasting vessels and steamers, should be put in the harbor regulations of the port, or some report thereon made of it more than there is. His attention waa called to the alleged oversight on Saturday, when the local letters of the Mary Blair, L U, were hoisted at the flagstaff. These letters, interpreted by the International Commercial Code —the code used by all nations —means " weigh, cut, or slip; wait for nothing," and it very naturally occurred to him that were his vessel at anchor in the stream in place of snugly lying at one of the jetties, he might bo tempted, particularly if the weather looked as black as it did on Saturday, to promptly act upon the command of the international codu, and " wait for nothing," but go to sea. Possibly in the case of a stranger such a mistake might be made, and the excuse that in the face of such signals going up at the station, he waß led to believe that there was danger in staying in this, " the safest port in the colony," would be a reasonable one enough. THE MEEOPE. Messrs Shaw, Savill and Co.'s well-known Canterbury visitor from London, in command of Captain Sutherland, arrived on Saturday, after a remarkably fine weather voyage, occupying ninety-eight days. Sixteen passengers arrived by h :r, and the vessel comes with a full cargo of general merchandise. The passengers apeak in the highest terms of praise of the courtesy shown them by Captain Sutherland and his officers, and the vessel has come into port in a condition which folly warrants their encomiums, everything on board showing evidence of care and good looking after. The voyage has been protracted by light winds, in both the trades and in running down the easting; confirmation of which is conveyed in the fact that only upon one occasion was the vessel under close-reefed topsails. A summary of the passage is supplied by Captain Sutherland as follows: —Left Gravesond at 10 a.m. on the 19th of March; towed to tho Downs and. anchored. A start -waa made U3Xt morning to beat down the Channel, and tho pilot was landed a'- Start Point on the 24ih. Light N.W. winds prevailed across the Bay of Biscay, and the N.E. trades were not met -with, until "3 N. and 23 W. was reached They were of good strength and held to 8.40 N., when the doldrums were experienced for several days. The Equator was crossed on the 22nd April in 26 W., and light S.E. trades were experienced to 28 S. 23 W., alter which fine weather and light winds prevailed to passing: the Cape of Good Hope on the 18th of May in 44 S. From the Cape to Kerguelen very good running was made, but after pat sing the island named a week of light fine easterly weather was met with. Tho easting was run down in a mean parallel of 47 S, and Tasmania was passed on the 13th instant. From there to the Snares, sighted last Monday at 8 a.m., light winds and calms with densely thick weather were experienced, and so continued all the way up the coast. Akoroallight was first seen on Thursday evening, but the wind was so light and shifty that tho whole of that night end thef ollowing day and night up to 4 a.m. on Saturday was pasped endeavoring to make the port The entry of the vessel was made on Saturday an hour after the ship anchored, and to-day she will be berthed to discharge, SHIPPING TELEGRAMS.
