THE TRAMWAY.
To the Iditor of the Globe.
Sib,—Alike on behalf of the interests of the general public, the shareholders, and management of the Canterbury Tramway Company, I mention a matter which fortunately was not attended with very serious results. The tram leaving the Square at a quarter-past five last night, instead of stopping at the Carlton Hotel corner, as usual, and as required, was driven on at the ordinaiy speed, carrying the passengers for that place with it much against their will. One of them, an old man, who has seen his three score and ten summers, after several unsuccessful attempts to get out, finding there was an opportunity of getting back by a tram coming back from St. Albans, jumped from the car when in full speed, and fell heavily upon the ground, which proved to be rather soft, and the only apparent|injury resulting was a good coating of mud and a sprained back. There can be no doubt about it, that the running of the tram cars is a very great convenience, and to make them a thorough succes the direotors should insist upon the car-drivers keeping faith with the public. It cannot be expected that old people can, with an agility seldom met with in the young, leave the tram when in motion, and this should not be rendered necessary. If the company are " short handed," this certainly ought not to be pleaded as an excuse for any omission of the time table obligations. I Yours, &c, I ONE'INTERESTED. Ohristchuroh, June 24th.
