NEW CATHOLIC CHURCH, KAIAPOI.
The Catholics of Kaiopoi and ita vicinity have determined to eroot a new ohnroh at Kaiapoi, and, out of a number of plana, have chosen one submitted by Mr Theodore B. Jacobsen, architect, Hereford street, by whose oourtesy we are enabled to furnish the following particulars of the projected work : The building will be of the following dimensions : Nave, 44ft. by 24ft. in the dear j sanotuary, 16ft. by 14ft.; vestry, lift, square. The superstructure will be of timber, on a foundation of conorete, which will rise two feet above the ground line and will be very Erottily moulded ; the height of the stud will e 14ft., and there will be a space of 31ft. • from the floor line to the cresting of she roof. The open principals, braokota, and pilasters will have a very pretty effect. The interior will be wainscoted diagonally with rimu to a height of four feet, above which the walls will be plastered. The roof—whioh is to bo shingled—will be pierced for four louvres on either side j buttresses will be placed at distances of nine feet from each other; the edifice being lighted by 12 lateral windows, with margin lights, whilst the front will boast
a beautiful tnree light window with rioh gothie mouldings overhead; surmounting this will be a very handsome rose window, and a quartrefoil light will be placed over the sanotuary, the whole being stopped with coloured glass. A massive gothio verge board, of a chaste pattern, terminates the front gable, the eaves being nioely set off by ornamental gothio-work, and entrance is gained by a lateral poroh, pierced for two lights at its sides. The tower stands on its own foundations, and rises to a height of 64ft, beine surmounted by a richly floriated cross. Due provision has been made for efficient ventilation from gablets and beneath the eaves, and eaoh sash will be made to allow of its being opened if necessary. The roof will show open prtnoipals, and be diagonally boarded, the interior being richly stained and varnished. Seating accommodation will be provided for 200 persons, but the construction will allow a gallery to be added subsequently, if rneeded. We must not omit to mention that the church will be dedicated to St. Patriok. No time will be lost in proceeding with the work, as it is intended to call for tonders during the ensuing week, and it is hoped the sacred edifice will be opened in the latter part of September.
