(FEU PBBBS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, Juno 2. Fire. A fire broke out to-night in Mr B. D. Biudon's bottling store, High street. A strong N.E. gale was blowing, and there -was great excitement when the fire bells rang. The fire originated in some straw in which bottled beer was stacked. The place was flooded by the brigade in a short time. Far more damage wasi done by water than by fire. Mr Whitaker will Speak. Mr Whitaker addresses his constituents on Saturday. The Sunday Question. A petition, signod by 230 ratepayers, asking that the free library may be opened on Sunday, is to be presented to the City Council at their meeting this evening. NEW PLYMOUTH, June 2. The Native Prisoners. The "Herald's" Urenui correspondent writes :—The Native prisoners returned here last week after an absence of close on two years. They oil say that they were treated very well in Ofcago ; in fact, not like prisoners. They left here on Monday for Parihaka with other Natives, and it is not thought that they will be back here for some time ; in fact, one of them said, we now live at Parihaka. The prisoners seem to be anxiously expecting the return of Pangai Puanana, a head man of Te Whiti's ; but he refused to return as long as one remains in gaol. When ' he returns, something extra in utua mue is ' expected to take place. The Natives are ! waiting for the land claims to be sottlod, and land given them, for which they have held ' scrip for thirteen or fourteen years. They are , asking when the Royal Commission is going , to sit hero. ; WELLINGTON, June 2. It has been decided to release all the , Maori political prisoners, and orders have , been sent to Dunedin, Lyttolton, and Hokitika , to have the Natives in readiness to embark at , once. The Hincmoa C3nveys those confined , ' South to Taranaki, and the Stella will tako i the remainder from Hokitika. 1 Sign of Confidence.
