An outhouse connected with a bouse occupied by Mr Leon Devonport was destroyed by fire, caused by an explosion of gas, which he was in the habit of manufacturing. The loss is £4O. DesperadoesCaptain Frater, of Auckland, who was the master of the Fernglen, gives the following particulars concerning the desperadoes captured in Edinburgh ;—James Waring Shepperd, third mate of the Fernglen, told the captain that he was a commercial traveller at Edinburgh two years previously. He seemed to have something on his mind, and was discharged at Wellington on January 13th, 1879. Mr Clark, manager of the South Pacific Petroleum Company, telegraphs to the “ Herald ” that the analysis of the paraffin material found in the company’s claim, made by Mr Dixon, public analyst, Sydney, shows 30 per cent, of solid paraffin. The balance is composed of kerosene, 23 per cent,; intermediate oils, 14 per cent.; heavy oils, 22; carbon and loss, 11. Scholastic. The Melbourne “ Age” states that the objective reading tables sent by Mr Hill, inspector of schools here, were awarded second prize, the first going to a London house. These tables were designed by Mr Hill, drawn by Mr Lamb, borough engineer, and lithographed by Messrs Dinwiddie, Walker and Co., being Napier productions throughout. Meat CompanyThe prospectus of the Meat Freezing and Export Company will be laid before a general meeting on Wednesday. Escape of a Prisoner. A prisoner escaped from the Botanical Gardens to-day by putting on a warder’s coat and strolling off in an unconcerned way. He was not missed for ten minutes. Ho was serving a short sentence, which would expire to-morrow. Compensation. The case against the City Corporation, in which £2OOO were claimed as compensation in connection with the SilverstreamWaterworks, has been settled by the payment of £OOO. Bad Company. It is stated that a man from Tuapeka woe robbed of £2OO by having his pocket picked at the Forbury races on the Queen’s Birthday. Jack Ashore. Desertion is very rife amongst the seamen at Fort Chalmers at present. Misguided PeopleA crowded meeting of sympathisers with the Irish Land League was held to-night, and resolutions were carried expressing sympathy and a subscription list was opened and a ladies committee formed.
