CANTERBURY COLLEGE.
An ordinary meeting of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College was hold yesterday afternoon, at 3 o’clock. Present— Mr F. de C. Malet (in tho chair), his Lordship the Primate, Rev. O. Fraser, Messrs J. N. Tosswill. O. O. Bo»en, H. P. Lance, W. J, W. Hamilton. H. J. Tancred, B. W. Foreday, J. O. Yeel, and Mr F. G. Stedman, registrar. The following report from the College committee was read „ ~, . 1 The committee recommends the Hoard tbat Regulation VI t. Section I. of the College Calendar bo bo amende! as to allow the students in their third year to receive credit for that year by passing the annual examination in three subjects only, and that the change take effect this year. 2. Tho committee recommends the Board to accept the tender of Messrs England and Martin for tho erection of the College hall and staircase turret for the sum of £6290, The Rev. C. Fraser, in moving the adoption of the first clause of the report, remarked that it would not restrict or curtail the subjects for study, but rather facilitate them, and was in accordance with tho inspector s recommendation. Mr W. J. W. Hamilton briefly seconded, and it was carried without discussion. The Rev. O. Fraser moved, and Mr J. N. Tosswill seconded, the adoption of the second clause of the report, which, after remarks from Messrs O. C. Bowen, J. N. Tosswill and tho chairman, was carried nem. ton, Tho following report from tho agricultural school committee was next considered os under:— 1. The committee recommends the Board to authorise the granting of certificates of merit to students of the School of Agriculture aa recommended in the director’s letter of 27th April. 2. The committee recommends the Board to increase the salary of the clerk to £7O per annum. 3. The committee recommends the Board to erect additions to the house lately purchased from Mr Todd, situated near the Agricultural School, at a cost not exceeding £-100, os a residence for Mr Kirk, who agrees to take the house at a yearly rental of £6O as long as ho holds the office of instructor in natural history. 4. The committee recommends that for the future the date of tho commencement of the school year be altered from the 20th July to 20th March. , ~ _ , . The report was adopted, Mr IT, de C Malet explaining that clause 4 was framed so that the Agricultural School terms be made to agree with those of the College. The Board then went into committee to consider the estates committee’s report and other matters of finance. On resuming, Mr Hamilton called attention to the necessity of all additions to the buildings being amply protected by builders’ risks, that no smoking should bo allowed on the premises, and that all shavings be removed from snob buildings in progress from day to day. The Chairman replied that all these matters were duly attended to. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr J. N. Tosswill, seconded by Rev. O. Fraser —" That Mr F. de c. Malet be requested to act as chairman of the various committees, to have the custody of the College seal, and be authorised to sign cheques during the absence of the chairman at the General Assembly.” Mr Fereday gave notice to move, at the next meeting of the Board— ** That an assistant at the Public Library be provided in the place of the assistant recently dismissed.”
