Tho Customs duties collected at Christchurch on Wednesday, May 25th, were as follows :— Spirits, £ll6 0s 9d ; wino, £sl 13s; boor, £5 lls ; sugar, £74 4s 2d ; ten, £6B 17s 8d; timber, £8 10s 3d ; goods by weight, £3l 15s 3d; nd valorem, £6 14a; other duties, £37 10s. Total, £IOO 16s Id. The past week in the import market has been utterly devoid of interest, and beyond a few sorting up lines, there is vary little to record. Business at the moment is admittedly dull, which is the more noticeable as at this period of the month a brisker tone is expected to prevail. Since our last report the Remington has arrived, several items of whoso cargo will be acceptable to tho market. The Orient has arrived at Port Chalmers from New York, and after discharging the Dunedin portion of her cargo will come on hero. A few sales can be noted in dried fruits, the trade being more disposed to moot importers’ views. Elomos have been sold more freely at to 7Jd for best fruit. Teas and sugars ore without special business. Cement is wanted on the spot, and better rates rule. Invoices to arrive have changed hands at 15s to 15s 6d. Wire nails of certain sizes are oat of first hands, and prices have reached famine rates. Galvanized iron is unaltered, and a fairly good enquiry has been experienced during the week. Ale and stout In bottle are lifeless, and sales hard to make. There is not much doing in brandies. Champagnes locally are without enquiry, but several parcels have been sold during the week for export at rates withheld. Qillord’s limojnice has been taken at 18s fid to 20s. Messrs J. B. Dale and Co. report the follow* ing sales of properties daring tho past two weeks : —Half-acre, Worcester street, Linwood, for JB170; section, William street. Lower High street, .£7O; one-eighth of an acre, North Opawa,>Bss ; section, Ferry road, £lls ; tworoomed cottage and section, near Ward’s Brewery, .£105; four-roomed cottage and 16 perches of land, Wright’s road, Sydenham, J 8220. There is a slight improvement in the letting department.
