A Bad ShepherdEdwin Charles Shepherd, Whatawhata settler, who was charged with cruelly treating three children from tho Homo for neglected and destitute children, has been committed for trial for alleged perjury during the hearing of tho case. Bail was fixed, himself in £4OO and two bondsmen of £250 each. The former sureties were disqualified, being related to the prisoner, and he has been locked up until other sureties are found. NEW PLYMOUTH, May 19. Mountain and Mole-Hill. The reported disturbancs near Punaarehu between Armed Constabulary and Natives turns out to be nothing serious. The following aro the changes decided on in the Union Company's service : Oaptain Logan, of the Hero, goes home to bring out the Manipori ; Oaptain McQee, of the Taiaroa, succeeding him in the Hero ; Capt. Anderson, late of the Wellington, gets the Taiaroa ; Mr Webster, chief officer of the Te Anau, is appointed to the Albion; Captain Jones, now of the Maori, is to be appointed to the Mahinapua, a twin screw steamer for the West Coast; Mr Mcintosh, chief officer of the Rotorua, succeeds him in the Maori Captain Orkney, now on a visit Home, will probably bring out the Omapere, to be employed in the Westport coal trade.

WELLINGTON, May 19. f On the Sands. At the Appeal Court to-day, argument in , the Dunedin case, Maitland v Pritchard (in ( error), was commenced, Mr Haggitt appear- , ing for the plaintiff in error, and Mr Stout , for the defendant. Plaintiff sued in the , Court below as Commissioner of Crown Lands , to recover from defendant £4OO damages for trespass on certain Crown land, and damages accruing by reason of such trespass. Defendant had entered into a contract with the Queen for the formation of the Dunedin railway station reclamation, and insisted on removing certain material from the sandhills adjaoont, although ordered not to do so by the Government Engineer and the plaintiff. Two questions were submitted, viz.: Whether defendant may be restricted under the contract from removing the sand ; and whethor, under the contract, defendant was entitled to insist upon removing sand, notwithstanding prohibition. The Court below had decided that defendant could not be restricted, and that defendant was entitled, under the contract, to remove sand. Aftor hearing part of the argument the Court adjourned till tomorrow. Land Transfer Fees. An Order in Council makes the following alteration of registration fees under the land Transfer Act, 1870:—"That there shal. be paid to the District Land Registrar, it respect of tho registration of any traisfer executed by any Registrar or Deputy-Regitrar of the Supreme Court, in addition to the registration fees, the following fees : —II not exceeding £2OO, 1 per cent, on the purthase money expressed in such trans Eer; if excseding £2OO, H per cent, on the remainder of tie purohase money.
