THE DRAINAGE BOARD.
To the Editor of the Globe. Sib, —May I ask your assistance in endeavoring to explain to the public the real merits of the case on whioh the Drainage Board is at issue with some of the ratepayers. The drainage works are now so far advanced that the Board is anxious to give the ratepayers the fullest measure of benefit from them at an early date. With this object in view they ask the ratepayers’ approval of their proposal to connect water-closets with the sewers ; and the reasons for their making this propo-al are as follows : 1. Mr Clark, the engineer, to whom tho question was referred, advises the adoption of this system, both on sanitary and economical grounds, 2. The cost of the present “ pan ’’ system to the City of Christchurch alone is, I believe, about £4500 a year. 3. The adoption of the water-closet system will relievo the city ratepayers from the payment of the above-mentioned £4500 a year, and the ratepayers outside of the city also to a considerable extent. 4. The ratepayers will have to pay the same drainage rate whether they adopt the water■ closet system or no ! Under such circumstances I can hardly think the ratepayers will deliberately prefer paying upwards of £4500 a year and _ still submitting to all the annoyance, of the nightman’s visits. R. J. S. HARMAN. May 18fch, 1881.
