VITAL STATISTICS OF LONDON.

'From the fifty-two weekly returns of the Registrar-General, it appears that there have been 132,170 births recorded in London in the past year. This number is equal to an annual rate of 362 per thousand inhabitants, the corresponding rate for 1879 being 36 5 that for 1878 standing at 36 1. The births were 51,043 in excess of the registered deaths ; this number, therefore, represents the natural increase of the population of London in 1880, emigration and immigration being disregarded. The deaths in London in the past year reached 81,128, thus giving an annual rate of 22'2 per thousand inhabitants, a very satisfactory one, being much lower than that for 1879, which was 23‘3, or for 1878, which was taken at 234. There wore 20,887 deaths in the past year under one year, and 16,949 occurred of adults aged 60 and upwards. In tne year 1878 (the date of the last annual return of the Registrar-General) there were 33,711 marriages celebrated in London. Of this total 28,734 took place according to the rites of the Church of England, and 4977 relate to Nonconformists. Of the 28,734 Church marriages 14 were by special license, 3143 by the ordinary license, 25,120 took place after publication of banns, 43 were on production of the Superintendent Registrar’s certificate, and in 14 cases the particulars wore not stated. As to the age of the married, it is stated that there were 1735 men married under 21, and 5906 women. There were 2513 cases where the man signed the marriage register by mark, and 3714 women. There were 1132 instances in which both the man and woman signed by mark, and 3963 cases occurred where one of the married people adopted this mode of signature.
