THE CENSUS.
The returns from the various sub-enumora-tors in ths counties of Solwyn, Ashburton and Akuroa are now in the hands of the enumerator, Mr Joseph Boswick, with the exception of one from the Coleridge electoral district. Mr W. H. Eyes, who has been closely at work chocking the books as they corae into the B.M. Court at lyttolton, the headquarters of the enumerator, has kindly supplied the following particulars for publication. It should bo stated that the figures are not vouched for as strictly correct, a> a great many of the schedules have yet to be checked. They will, however, bo found to be near enough for ordinary purposes until the officially audited and corrected return can be obtained. At the last census, taken in 1878, the total population of the three counties above-named was given to bo 61,600. From figures taken from the papers in the hands of the enumerator now, it appears that 62,896 names are recorded, and Coleridge district is not yet complete. Towards the return from the last-named district close upon 11,000 Barnes are in, which added to the 62,896 gives a total for the throe counties of close upon 74,000. When the Coleridge return is completely known it is thought that the population will appear to bo 75,000 now in the three counties, as against 61,609 in 1878
The populations given above o£ the boroughs are stated merely for the information they convey. The figures have, of course, been included in those placed opposite to the particular electoral districts within which the borough is situated.
