The Maori population exceeds the European by 610. The total population of the borough of Gisborne is 1000. DUNEDIN, May 17. Tararua Inquiry. Judgment re the e.s. Tararua will not be given tor two or throe days. Captain Cameron, in evidence to-day, stated that the boats on board the Tararua were insufficient to hold all the people. AUCKLAND, May 17. It has tran:pired that Jas. Quinlan shipped as fireman aboard the Tararua at Port Chalmers. He leaves a widowed mother in Auckland, destitute, having supported her for years. He was unmarried. ASHBURTON, May 17. Scot Free. Bushett, charged with obtaining goods under false pretences from T. R. Hoddcr and Co., was dismissed. More Valuable Effusions. E. G. NAPIER, May 17. Water. The Borough Council, in committee last night, adopted a scheme for extending the water supply to the hill portion of the town, at an estimated cost of £IO,OOO.
