Mr Darrooh deposed that he had lost £SOO above the insurance of £3OO. The jury returned an open verdict. Building AccidentJames Hadley, carpenter, fell from a ladder while working at the extension of the Edinburgh Castle Hotel, and died in a few hours. He leaves a wife and five children. A Crown Orant. At the Waste Lands Board it was stated that Messrs Grant and Foster had paid £3OOO to the Agent-General as preliminary deposit on the Ta Aroha lands. TAUBANOA, May 12. Population. The census returns show the population of Tanranga and the B yof Plenty to be 3399 being an increase of 71 per cent since 1878. WELLINGTON, May 12. Baconian Fallacy. The Cattle Board to-day refused an application for the release of two pigs, the property of Mr Canning, of Hawke's Bay, which arrived per ship Hurunui on January 14th last, and which have remained in quarantine ever since on account of no certificate from shippers declaring that they were free from disease at the time of shipment being produced by the consignees. As a considerable distance separated the two stacks the fire Is put down to incendiarism. Steeplechasing. The programme issued by the local Steeplechase Club comprises a Maiden Steeplechase of 40 sovs; Handicap Steeplechase of 100 sovs ; Belling Stakes of 40 sots ; and Consolation of 30 sovs. Entries for the first and third and nominations for the Handicap close on the 28lh Inst. Cum Qrano. A coroner’s inquiry into the circumstances attending the destruction by fire of a stack of grain on the farm of Mr McDowell was held to-day. The grain was insured for £l9O, and was stated to be the produce of 180 acres. McDowell told a witness that 700 bags had been burned. A threshing mill proprietor gave evidence to the effect that he hnd threshed McDowell's crop of oats, amounting to 163 bags. This was exclusive of a portion cut into chaff, which he stated was carted away to McDowell’s homestead. The verdict was to the effect that the stack was designedly sot fire to, but there was not sufficient evidence to show by whom. DUNEDIN, May 12, The Colonial Hudson. Mr Proudfoot’s railway contract from Eiverton to Orepnki is fast approaching completion, and all the workmen are proceeding to Mr Prondfoot’s railway work in New England, New South Wales.

The Premier will address, his constituents at Looston towards the end of this month, and not during the coming month, as stated in a Press Association telegram fromOhristcbnrch. The exact date has not yet been fixed. Some important declarations of policy in connection with the coming session are expected to bo contained in his speech.The Government are busily preparing for the work of the session. The Charitable Aid and Licensing Bills, similar to those of last session, are already in typo, and others are progressing.
