The lifeboat* o£ the National Lifeboat Inetitution of Great Britain during the storms of the year 1880 rescued 570 lives and 26 vessels from destruction. In the lame period the Lifeboae Institution granted rewards for saving 120 lives by fishing and other boats, and other means, making a total of 690 lives saved last year, mainly through its instrumentality. Altogether, sinoo its formation, the Booiety has contributed to the saving of 27,596 shipwrecked persons.
