FIRE IN COLOMBO STREET.
A fire broke out this morning at about twenty minutes past sir o’clock in the premises occupied by Mr A. Hulme, baker, situated at the north-west corner of Colombo and Peterborough streets. Mr Hulme was working in the bakehouse, getting ready a first batch of bread for the day’s trade. An alarm was speedily rung out by both Chester street and Lichfield street fire-bells. The railway signal horn was also blown. The Fire Brigade were quickly on the spot, and Mr Superintendent Harris immediately gave orders to plant the engines on Colombo street bridge. A plentiful supply of water was then obtained without delay, and was brought to bear on the blazing building. Meanwhile some of the neighbors wore busy attempting to rescue the inmates, who were asleep when the fire began, Mr Hulme rushed ipto the house, and boro three of his smaller children from the building with considerable difficulty. Mr Braesington, of Kilmore street, reared a ladder against one of the bedroom windows, and. mounting it, rescued Mrs Hulme. The Brigade played three jots of water on the fire, which was soon got under, but not before the whole of the stock and furniture were cither destroyed or damaged by fire and water. As the wind was blowing strongly from the east, it was feared the ravages of the fire would extend to the cottages westward ; but, owing to corrugated iron being the material used on the bakehouse and kitchen attached, these fears were fortunately not realised. The Brigade did their work excellently, and, before seven o’clock, its services had ceased to be required. The following insurances wore effected by Mr Hulme: —£600, in the South British, on the stock; £3OO on the shop and dwelling-house, in the Standard; £IOO on the shop fixtures and fittings, in the Victoria; £2OO on the furniture and wearing apparel, in the Transatlantic; and also £3OO, in the Victoria, on the bakehouse, which luckily did not catch fire. Mr Hulme estimates his loss at £4OO over the amount of insurance on the stock.
