A tragio event took place yesterday afternoon in the district of Papanui. From tho report of Constable Wallace it appears that he was called to the house of John Day, a jobbing gardener, Clare road, and ascertained tho following particulars :—At about 1 o’clock p.m., whilst Mr Day was in' his kitchen, cooking, a strange unusual noise in bis wife’s bedroom attracted his attention. On going in he found Mrs Day “ in convulsions, and seemingly in hysterical fits.” Ho asked her what was tho matter, and she replied, “I have poisoned mysslf with poison, which I took from your box on Easter Sunday,” The unfortunate woman expired almost immediately after making this statement, to whioh one of Day’s neighbors was a witness. Dr. Townend had been sent for, but though ho was quickly on tho spot, the woman was dead before his arrival. The poison was purchased at Elliot and Co.’s, chemists, by Mr John Day, who said ho wanted it to kill rats. The latter stated to the constable that ho kept it in a box of which he had tho key, and no one but himself could get it unless with a second key. Ho found a duplicate in the house yesterday. An inquest will bo bold at tho Carlton, at 4 p.m. this day.
