The Union Steamship Company's s.s. Hawoa arrived on Saturday at 6.15 a m. from Wellington and Northern ports, and left at night, on arrival of the overland train for Wellington, Picton, and Nelson, taking the mails for the outgoing ran Francisco steamer. Xim oyctaulmiu from Aacjoatcrday in balla t. She anchored at about eleven o'clock in the forenoon, and will be berthed to■day to load grain for the New Zealand Shipping Company. The passage down occupied ten days. Captain Miller, in command, was here some years ago with the Peeress.

THE MATAURA. Yesterday afternoon the barqne Matenra in the harbor after a long passage for her of 100 days. She brought a full cargo of general merchandise, particulars of which are given above, and a few passengers. The length of the voyage is accounted for by the indifferent trade winds which prevailed both north and south of the Equator, and how exceptionally poor these mast have been may be inferred from the fact that the Matanra’s average voyages to the colony and homo have been but 83 days. Her name is well known in the colonial trade as one of the representatives of the New Zealand Shipping Company’s line of ships, and her reputatioa will bear favorable comparison with any in the trade. In previous years she has cbiefly been despatched to Wellington or Port Chalmers, and this is her first visit to Lyttelton. Captain Brown, who commands her, Is not, however, a stranger to the port, having been here several times in other vessels belonging to the company, i' is chief officer, Mr Donaldson, is also an old acquaintance, and was here a short while ago in the Waipa. The cleanly appearance of the Matanra yesterday, as she came to an anchor in the port, did those gentlemen infinite credit, and both Captain Brown and bia officers, it also appeared bad, dnring the voyage, earned the good opinion and esteem of the passengers. The following is an account of the paarage:— Left tendon January 13th, Gravesend the next day, and the Lizard on the 17th. Had hard gales from the H. W. crossing the Bay of Biscay and sighting Madeira. Passed between Palma ■cdTeneriffe. picking np there the N.K. trades. They were very f .int indeed, and were carried to crossing the Equator February 19th in 28 W. The S.E. trado i w. re unsettled and equally, and -were lost on March Ist in 20 S. Light westerly winds prevailed thence t j the Capo, the meridian of which was crossed on March 20th in 43 S. Tbo westerlies were taken off the pitch of the Cape, and the easting was run down in 42 to 44 3. The average running from the Cope to the Snares was 240 miles per day. The best day’s work waa 296 milos._ Four heavy gales were experienced in running the easting, bnt no damage of consequence was sustained. The meridinn of tbo Leuwin was crossed on April Bth, and Tasmania was passed on the 14th, the Snares being next made on Monday last. The fallowing vessels were spokenOithowa, ship, Liverpool to Bombay, in 2 N. 26 W,, February 18th; Duke of Athol, 28 S , 30 W., London to Queensland, with immigrants, all well ; Florence, barqne, in 41 8. 86 K., 110 days out, from Balearic Isles, bound to Keppell Bay, and on Saturday last, at I p m.,cff the Peninsula spoke the Himalaya, barque, hound from London to Wellington.
