BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the North Canterbury Board of Education was held yesterday afternoon at three o’clock. Present —Messrs J. Inglis (chairman), O. O. Bowen, H. J. Tancred, H. W. Peryman, W. Montgomery, G. Booth, H. R. Webb, A. H. Cunningham, Her. C. Eraser, and Mr J. C. Voel, secretary. The Secretary reported that the following appointments of school mistresses had been made :—Oxford west, Miss Alice Chapman ; Akaroa, Miss Jane Buxton ; Leeston, Miss May Bain. The seal of the Board was ordered to be affixed to certain contracts, and several pupil teachers’ agreements. The Chairman reported that a communication had boon received from the Board of Governors of Canterbury College, re the new High School, which he would read. [Read.] He would suggest the consideration of the motion on the subject standing in the Rev. C. Eraser’s name, as under :—“ That the boys holding under the Board and now receiving instruction in district schools, or privately, be informed that on the 18th May tho Christchurch Boys’ High School will bo opened, and that they will be required to attend thereat.” After considerable discussion it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Wm. Montgomery, seconded by Mr O. 0. Bowen—- “ That in view of the opening of the Boys’ High School on the 18tL May next, it is resolved—“ That the boys holding scholarships under tho Board bo requested to attend at the Christchurch Boys’ High School, or at the Christ’s College Grammar School, or at the Ashburton High School, provided such schools are subject to inspection by a public school inspector, according to the provisions of the Education Act, 1877; and that girls holding scholarships attend the Christchurch Girls’ High School.”
On the motion of Mr Tailored, the further consideration of Mr Barclay’s application was deferred till the next meeting of the Board. _ A letter was read from the Rangiora school committee, staling that the difficulties in the way of combining the elementary and high schools wore unsurmountable, and they would withdraw their petition on that subject. Mr Cunningham gave notice of motions for next meeting as under :—“Seeing that thirtyseven pupil teachers failed to pass at their annual examination, steps to ho taken to examine them half-yearly.” “That the payment of the second and fourth quarterly gratuities to teachers in each year shall depend on the successful passing of the lesnectivo pupil teachers.” The Board then adjourned.
