SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

. ♦ EYRETON. At a meeting of this oommitteo held on Monday evening, there were present all the members, Mr Miller, ohairman, presiding. It was decided to bring into operation the compulsory clauses of the Education Act. Arrangements were made for the distributionof prizes, a sum of £8 to be expended in prize books, the Rev. W. M'Gregor to make a eeleotion of the same. It was decided that a tea meeting and concert be held on Good Friday evening in aid of the funds, for the purchase of the prizes, at which several members of tho Kaiapoi Choral Society had promised to assist. WAIKUKU. The usual monthly meeting of the .Sohool Committee was hold on Tuesday evening. Present Messrs M'Donald (chairman). Ligget, Morriss, Pope and Griffiths. Correspondence was read from the Board of Education re salaries, &c; also, from the master, enclosing the usual report, which was read and considered. It was agreed that the school hours until October Ist, should be from 9.30 till 3, allowing an hour's recess for dinner. It was resolved to procure a supply of fuel for the winter, and have the chimney attended to. The question of oelebrating the anniversary of the sohool was discussed, and it was decided to appoint the ohairman and master as a committee to carry out all matters in connection with the same, which it was agreed should take the form of an afternoon's sports, and tea with an entertainment in the evening. After payments of salaries, the committee adjourned. BROADFIELD. The usual monthly meeting of the School Committee was held on Monday evening last. Present —Messrs Maginness (chairman), Robinson, Denison, S. Early, sen., and W. Early. The following correspondence was read—From the Secretary of the Education Board—(a) Advice of salaries for March, (b) Circular requesting the committee to seleot from tho ' gentlomen nominated one to fill the Jextra- ' ordinary vacanoy at the Board of Education, ' (c) Circular referring to the proposal of the ' Postmaster-General to receive deposits of ' penny postage stamps for lodgment in any Post Office Savings Bank from sohool obildren. The vote of the committee for the extraordinary vacanoy was given in favor cf Mr E. J. Lee. The schoolmaster was requested to explain to the soholart the opportunity afforded by the Postmaster. General in tho matter of penny savings. After the discussion of sundry detail matters, the committee adjourned. SOUTH EAKAIA. The usual monthly meeting was held on Tuesday. Present—Messrs Hardy (chairnan/, Davies, Bowler, Byrne, and Guarder. Che ohairman stated that no application had ieen reoeived for the appointment of assistant nistress. After some consideration it was ■esolved that the chairman interview the lecretary to the Board on the subject. The naster's report was read and received. Correspondence was read from the Board of Educaaon, after which the Committee adjourned, 80TJTHBRIDGE. The ordinary monthly meeting was held in the sohoolroom, Southbridge, on Monday, April 4th. Present—Messrs Stavely (chairman), Cameron, Webster, Frame, Graham, Burns, and Woodbury. The salary list and several accounts were passed for payment. It was decided to vote for Mr E. J. Lee to fill the extraordinary vacancy on the Board of Education. Correspondence was read re the Penny Savings Bank, and the same was ordered to be posted up in the sohool poroh. The use of the school ground was granted to the Football Club for the season, subject to same conditions it was lent to Cricket Club. The head-master's report was read, and considered very satisfactory, the average attendance being 213. It was resolved to if possible induce the Board to provide increased space at the sohool. Tho committee spoke in highly complimentary terms of Mr Lucas, the headmaster, for his untiring zeal in training his pupils to such musical perfection as they showed at the late concert, and a vote of thanks was recorded to him for the same. After some minor business had been transacted the meeting adjourned. WAKAWUL At a meeting of the above body held last Tuesday a letter was read from the Board of Education complaining of not receiving certain returns. The ohairman said Mr Earle would not give any satisfactory explanation of the matter, and it was resolved— '* That the ohairman send to the Board an abstract of the incidental accounts as they appear in the cashbook. That he inform the Board that sums of money raised by local effort do not appear i in the accounts, and that the Board be referred to Mr Earle for any further information thereon." It was also resolved—" That the ohairman write to the Board of Education, calling their attention to the very dilapidated and uncomfortable state of the master's house, and urge upon them the necessity of having the house repaired before the winter sets in. Carried. Mr Alfred Saunders was nominated to the vacant Hat on theßoard of Education."
