THE PROFITS OF A LANDLORD

The case reported under the above heading on April 2nd, again cropped up at the Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Messrs Ollivier, Lee, and Dobson, J.P.'b. The proceedings wero as follows: Wright v Cooper, £2 2s. This was a cross aotion. On March the 31st defendant, Thomas Cooper, the proprietor _ of a house in Perth street, Bingaland, whioh has for a long time been let for the purposes of a brothel, sued the present plaintiff for arrears of rent amounting to £6. He oharged Wright for the house at the rate of £2 per week, and she was turned out of it to make room for another " girl" who paid £2 5s per week, although, as she swore, the rent of tho house, if let to ordinary tenants, would havo been only 9s or 10s per week. He obtained judgment in his favor. Mrs Wright, in tho course of the examination, had mentioned that she had caused some repairs to be done to the house, which Cooper had premised to pay for and did not. The Magistrates therefore ordered execution to be stayed until Mrs Wright had brought an action against Cooper for the amount she had paid for repairs. The present action was the result. Dofendant had consented to judgment. Mrs Wright now asked for the expenses of a witness, and to be allowed time to pay what she had to pay to Cooper. She was allowed 6s for her witness. As to giving her time to pay Cooper, the Benoh explained that that wos out of their power. She would have to mako what arrangement she could with Cooper.
