Supreme Court. At the Supreme Court this morning, Samuel Brown, an old settlor and an ex-merchant, was arraigned on several charges of larceny and burglary. The only evidence for the defence was .the production of witnesses as to character, who included the Hon. Mr Whitaker, the Hon. Mr Dynan Clark, the Mayor and others, who had known prisoner for thirty and forty years. The Judge said it was a very extraordinary ease. Sentence has not yet been given. Warner was sentenced to two years for larceny as bailee ; Sutherland to two years for breaking and entering. In the case of Bell, of Ohaupo, for embezzlement, counsel for the defence pleaded that the man had boon drinking. He was sentenced to three years.

The Mining Swindle.
Apropos of the false prospectus of the so-called Haven Gold Mining Company (Limited), Thames Goldfields, reported by the late English mail as about being floated in the London market, the editor of the “Star” has sent full information to the Minister of Mines pointing out the desirability of Government’s contradicting the statements in Eng-
land. In the prospectus the richest claims of the goldfield are referred to as lying adjacent to the proposed scene of operations, though some of the said claims are miles distant from each other. No such urea as that specified hoe been taken up under licence.

Hearn, of Wellington, has accepted the challenge of A. CollegiateThe Wellington College Governors to-day unanimously appointed Mr Joseph McKay, M.A., of Aberdeen, now and for twelve years resident and mathematical master at Nelson College, to be principal of Wellington College, The Penguin Inquiry. The inquiry into the recent mishap to the steamer Penguin began this morning. The evidence adduced shows that the accident was due to the chief officer's mistaking Boot Cove for Dreffonbach Point. The investigation is still proceeding. WESTPOET, April 7. Patal AccidentA terrible accident occurred at Waunangaroa, this morning. Wm. Young, fireman on the railway, when working on a coal train, slipped, and a truck wont over his body, killing him instantaneously DUNEDIN, April 7. Challenge Cup. The dispute re the Challenge Cup has been decided in favour of the Dunedin Club. Theatricals Discountenanced. The Dunedin School Committee have declined to countenance the attendance of the school children at the performance of “ Pinafore," for which free admission was offered to the certificated teachers. MiningThe Homeward Bound Company, at Macetown, have crushed 235 ounces from 334 tons.
