SOUTH RAKAIA LIBRARY.
The annual meeting of subscribers to the Public Library of South Eakaia was held on Thursday, March 31st, at 8 p.ru., when the secretary read the following report, which was adopted : The committee, in submitting this report, have much pleasure in congratulating you on your sound financial position, but at the same time regret that subscribers are not increasing, though equal in numbers to last year. In consequence of the stoppage of the Government grant, your committee had to make provision for getting money from another source, and they let two sections of thereserve for the sum of £4O per annum. This, with the subscriptions, will, with economy, keep up a good library and a fair supply of papers. Immediately on receipt of news that the Government subsidies had ceased, your committee applied to the County Council for a grant, but were unsuccessful. Teu will see by the improvements to the building that we have not been regardless of your comfort, and the treasurer’s statement of accounts will show that the work has been done most economically. The committee have purchased 100 new books, which brings the library up to nearly 700 volumes, and have ordered some fresh newspapers and periodicals, which will be laid on the tables in due course. In consequence of the improvements and additions to the library, your committee thought it advisable to increase the insurance, which is now .6250 on building and contents.
The treasurer’s accounts showed the receipts for the past year, including the balance of £2l 5a Id, to be £63 15s ; expenditure, £44 18s Id s liabilities, £l7 7s 5d ; to assets, £36 14s lid, leaving a balance in hand of £lO 7s 6i.

The following members were elected as a committee for the ensuing year:— Messrs Hardy, Bowler, Clark, Rev Mr Westbrooke, Whitta, Bruce, and Ellis.
