AUCKLAND, April 2. Vessel Capsized. A rumor was circulated in town to the effect that the Diamond, owned by Mr Edward Close, with that gentleman, his wife and family, and one or two other persons on bo»rd, was capsized off the Island of Kawau during a galo yesterday. The information of the capsize was sent to the Water Police, who know nothing further. Passengers per City of Hew York. The following embarked at Auckland on the missing mail steamer Oity of New York : —Saloon : Mr and Mrs Woodruff and family, Mr and Mrs H. F. Builey, Mr and Mrs Munterglhor., nurse, and six children ; Mr and Mrs Brooke, Mr M. Koenig, Messrs Lester, George, Gibson, McEwen, Phelps, W. H. Turner, J. S. Nightingale, J. T. Burns, Edw. WELLINGTON, April 2. Resumption of Mail Service. The daily moil service, from Wellington to Wanganui, has been restored at an extra expenditure of £l7O a year. Bush FiresSerious bush fires have occurred in suburban districts. Defunct. The Stella has returned from Cape Campbell, bringing the body of Mr W. Hendall, lighthouse-keeper, who died from heart disease. Warning to Newspaper Projectors. The following resolution was passed by the oommittee appointed at a recent meeting to float a new Newspaper Company:—"That this mooting, in view of the present depressed state of trade, and the very meagre support accorded by those loudest in their demand for a new daily paper for Wellington, is of opinion that the venture is premature, and will not justify the outlay necessary to the proper carrying out of the same, and that Mr Joseph Ivess be written to to that effect." NELSON, April 2. Afloat Again. The schooner Richard and Mary has been floated, apparently but little injured. GREYMOUTH, April 2. Revenue. The Customs duties collected here for March amounted to £2779, ond for the corresponding month in 1880 £2727. Bear duty excise amounted to £67 19s. The duties collected for the quarter were £B4BI, and for the corresponding quarter in 1880 £6214. DUNEDIN, April 2. The Crops. Most favorable accounts of the crops have been received from the country districts. The Rain. Yesterday's rain, whioh was general, was most welcome to the farmers. Crime. The return of arrests and cases reported in the Otago district for the year ended December 31st last, just completed, Bhows a decrease of 1316 cases on the corresponding period for 1879, [PBOM THE OWN COBRESPONDHNT OF THE "PRESS."] WELLINGTON, April 2. Messrs Batkin and Seed formally presented to the Government this evening their report on the reorganisation, reform and retrenchment of the Civil Servioe in the North Island. Thoy indicate the practicability of extensive further reduction in the expenditure, while at the same time by a remodelling of the system the efficiency will be improved rather than diminished. Details of their recommendations are not yet made public Messrs Batkin and Seed start for the South Island investigation oa Monday.
