The building, which had formerly been used as a boarding-houso, hud been vacant for some months, and bo far tho origin of the firo ia unaccountable. The flames sproad with groat rapidity, and long before the arrival of the brigade, the principal portion of tho building fronting on Durham street was beyond saving. The Bmaller part which adjoined in St. Asaph street was plastered, and owing to the dampness of the ahinglo roof, withstood the flames for some time. When it did ignite, it buvned slowly, and the water Boon took effect. Threo roomß woro occupied by a mechunic and hi 3 family, the upartmcr.tn haTing recently been fitted up for them by tho owner at considerable expense. Oloso to was tho houaci of Mr H-milton, bandmaster, and ao at one time norioua damage, if not destruction, appeared imminent, hiß furniture and bolongingn wero removed to a placo of safety. Fortunately, however, tho precaution woa unnecessary, ao the house was uninjured. On tho other aido of the boarding-house was a cottage, aho owned by Mr Pengelly, and, although tho heat scorched the side Bornewhat, no groat damage waa sustained. Both engines wero at work, one being stationed at the Tuam Btreet tank, and tho other close to the Cashel street bridge The boardinghouse, which wuo a two-storey one, wbb inlured for £250 irA tho Victoria, but it ia needless to suy that Mr Pongelly's loss will bo considerably ovor this amount. A large crowd was collected, and tho glare of the Hamas, refleotod and intensified by the foggy atmoßphere, had quite a pioturesque effect.
