TARANAKI RACES. (press association telegram.) NEW PLYMOUTH, March 31. The weather for the first day’s races was gloomy, but the attendance was large. Maiden Plate ; 1]- miles. Venture, Bst 21b I Frivolity, Bst 2 Sunray, 9st 31b 3 Six started. Won easily by a length. Time, 2min 52sec. Handicap Steeplechase ; 3 miles. Chandler, list 1 Kckorangi, Ost'Slb ... 2 Lady Grey. 9st 41b 3 Seven started. Matau was scratched. Pat. chern fell at the double jump opposite the stand, and Chandler won by twenty lengths. Jockey Club Handicap, 2 miles. Matan, 6st 91b 1 Libeller, Bst 121 b 2 Ban, Sst 3 Mr Walters declared to win with Libeller. Coming up the hill Libeller made a grand effort and ran through the field like lightning, but could not get upon terms with Matau, who won by a length. Time, 3min. 44sec. Taranaki Cup, 2 miles. Libeller, 9st ... 1 Hailstorm, 9st 41b 2 Endymion 9st 4lb ... ... ... 3 At the end of a mile and a halt Libeller was called on, and responded brilliantly, an exciting race ensuing between him and Hailstorm. After a neck and neck race Libeller won by a length.
