A ship, deep laden, was within sight from the Hoads to-day when onr express left. She will probably prove to bo from Newcastle, with coal, and to load hers the present season with grain. Mr C. W. Turner’s brigantine Cleopatra arrived yesterday with coal from Groymouth. The Government steamer Stella arrived on Saturday at 4 p.m. from a lighthouse cruise. Captain Gray received his advices from headquarters relative to taking in the mail for the San Francisco steamer and the passengers to Wellington in the absence of the Union Company’s steamer Penguin, which got aground in Tory Channel. The Stella had a fall cargo of telegraph poles and material when she came into port, but with commendable energy, Captain Gray had a sufficient quantity of it landed here on Saturday afternoon to make room for the mails and the luggage of the passengers. Mr Puflett, the obliging local agent for the Union Steamship Company, made every possible arrangements with Captain Gray for the conveyance of passengers who had booked to go by the Penguin on Saturday night, and who would otherwise have been inconvenienced and disappointed, and Captain Gray did everything in his power towards meeting the wants of the passengers in the matter of accommodation. The berthing accommodation of the Stella in the saloon and forward was in itself quite inadequate to satisfy the number of passengers who presented themselves on board after the arrival at Port of the express train, and it would require to be supplemented by “ shake downs ” to a considerable extent on the passage np. The steamer left for Wellington at about 9,30 p.m. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. Auckland, March 26. Arrived—Defiance, from Danodin. Aratapu, from Lyttelton. Wellington, March 28. The s.s.
