HARVEST HOME AS PAPANUI.
?n Friday evening last, March 25 h, leading farmers and residents in the Papanui district met at the Papanui Hotel, on the invitation of Host Charles Amyos to partake of his hospitality and celebrate the gathering in of a bountiful harvest. About fifty gentlemen sat down to a banquet of a most excellent character, Mr D. Thomas (of the firm of H. Matson and Co.) being in the chair, and Messrs 0. E. Briggs and H. B. Alport in the vice-chairs. The Rev. P. GK BrTttan said grace, after which ample justice was done to the good things provided. On the removal of the cloth the usual loyal and patriotic toasts were duly proposed and cordially responded to; also those of the 11 Agricultural and Pastoral Interest,” “ The Commercial Interest,” “ Success to Papanui,” “The Host and Hostess,” “The Press," and “The Ladies.” In responding to the toast of 11 The Press,” Mr Briggs remarked upon the extraordinary habit of Englishmen in placing the Fourth Estate—the bulwark and guardian of our liberties—at the bottom of the toast list, instead of in its proper place, next to the Parliament. Harmony was plentiful, and of that very excellent character for which Papanui is so famous. The “sparkling” being from the cellars of Messrs Wilson, Sawtell and Co., was of unexceptional quality, and the party broke up in “ the wee sma’ hours ayont the twal,” highly delighted with the entertainment provided. It should not be omitted that in addition to the songs, a recitation of Burns’ celebrated “ Tam o’ Shanter” was given by a gentleman hailing from north of the Tweed, in such a manner us would have been alike a treat and an example for Herr Bandmann.
