The second voyage of this steamer from London was completed yesterday morning to this port direct in fifty-one days and twenty hours. Upon the occasion of her first arrival here lost June u very full description of the vessel was given in the so columns, and the report now supplied below but confirms tho high encomiums which were then Sassed upon her capabilities. The steamer left the .W. India Docks on January 29th, Gravesend ■oat day, anchored at Plymouth on January 31st, and left there at 5.20 p.m. the some day, when tho pilot lott her. Experienced a hard S.W. gale crossing the Bay of Biscay, which held for fortyeight hours, and was succeeded by light westerly weather to St. Vincent, where the steamer anchored at 6.30 p.m. February Bth. She stayed there fifty-two and a half hours, and left for the Cape on February 11th at 3 a.m. The equator was crossed on February 15th, in 12.57 W., and from there to Capetown a strong S.E. trade and heavy sea was steamed against. On February 2Cth at 11.20 a.m. tho Norfolk anchored in Table Bay, having been off tho port six hours in a deuso fog. At midday on March Ist sho loft for Lyttelton, her detention of 72 hours 45 minutes being caused by the delay in coaling, the result of tho presence there of a large number of transports, the coaling of which absorbed all the available labor. From Cape Town to the Snares, which were passed last Wednesday at 2 p.m., the weather, though westerly, was almost unprecedentedly fine. Tho sails wore never rolled np on the yards the whole way down the Basting, but once or twice when calms necessitated their being clewed np—a fact remarkable enough of itaolf in these latitudes. Light winds were experienced from tho Snares to arrival in port at 2 a.m yesterday. As on the last visit of the Norfolk, Cant tin Jasper Pyne O'Callaghan is in command, ana he appears to have won, during tho voyage, the golden opinions of tbe passengers, expressed in a testimonial addressed to himself and his officers, presented to him on arrival of the steamer. Mr Matbitia, the chief offlcer, specially shares in tho compliments conveyed in the testimonial, and, like his superior, he seems to have been very popular with all on board. Tho complete list of officers is os follows :—Chief engineer, Mr W. W. Prophet, late of the steamer Kent; chief officer, Mr John Mathias ; second, Mr J. Tracey; second engineer, Mr Sheppard; third, Mr Spiers ; third officer, Mr Woods; fourth engineer, Mr Hodson; fourth officer, Mr Anderson. The chief steward, Mr Keen, returns again as great a favorite and as efficient in his department as ever. Tho henlch of the passengers, a full list of whom is given elsewhere, •was throughout excellent. There was one death on February 17th, the instance being that of Emma Young, a child of seven years of ago, from diphtheria. Dr. J. M. Prendergast, who left Victoria some time since for the purpose of studying medicine at Home, returns as surgeon of tho ship, after passing a successful examination. It is probable he will become a permanent settler in this colony. The Norfolk on her arrival yesterday presented a picture of cleanliness and real comfort from stem to stern. The ventilation throughout tho ship is all that could be wished, and everyone met with on board had a good word for tho steamer’s seagoing qualities. The monotony of tho voyage out had been pleasantly relieved by entertainments given from time to time, and the success of those was in no small degree enhanced by the presence at them of Mr and Mrs Carden, the well known actors, who wore passengers en route to Sydney. Mr and Mrs T. Garrard, passengers, also contributed in a praiseworthy degree to tho amusements started during tho voyage. There was some little grumbling about tho food supplied to tho passengers, and Mr J. B, .Varch and Dr. J. T. Ronse, the health officer, heard the complainants very patiently. The cooking of the food appeared to have given anything but satisfaction iu the fore part of tho ship, and tho variety of it, or rather want of variety, mot with, some disapproval in the second cabin, but it is but justice to the ship and her owners to say that from cursory conversation held amongst the passengers in both classes the dietary scale observed was anything hnt seriously objectionable, and in the majority of instances the objectors' statements were of the flimsiest character. In every instance where a grievance, or supposed grievance, had been brought before tho notice of the captain, it was admitted that ho bad immediately given the utmost attention to it. As showing tho Norfolk's steaming capabilities, the fo lowing may be of interest:—The average speed from Plymouth to St. Vincent was 11.7 knots, St. Vincent to Cape Town 10.75, Cape Town to Lyttelton 12.5, or 301 knots per day. The average for the passage was 11.7 knots, and the total distance steamed 13,207 miles. Directly she was cleared she steamed direct to a berth in the inner harbor, and commenced to discharge. The entry was made at tho Customs promptly on her arrival, and tho usual notice is given to consignees in another column by her agents, Messrs Dalgety and Co. The total number of souls on hoard the steamer is given as follows: —Passengers : For Lyttelton, 23; for Wellington, 128; for Sydney, 91; total, 242. Captain, officers, and engineers, 10; potty officers, seamen and firemen, 54; stewards' departments, 41; surgeon, 1; total, 318. PORT OF AKAROA. Arrived—March 24.
