DESTRUCTIVE FIRE.

[PBBSS ASSOCIATION TftLIKJHAM. J WELLINGTON, March 24,. A most disastrous firo broke out at Featherston this morning, resulting in the destruction of property valued at over £BOOO. Tho fir< was first discovered in Faber’s Olub Hotoi about 11 o’clock, and the flames having got a good hold, spread with surprising rapidity, ard the building was soon enveloped. A larg< number of neighbors fumed out, but the moans of checking fire at Featherston being of the meat primitive description, tbfir efforts to atop tho conflagration were futile. The hotel was aoon burnt to tho ground, and, despite the energetic efforts made by the bystanders, the flames spread to the building* on the opposite side of the road. Messrs Taogood’s general store was soon wrapped in flames, and was totally destroyed, along with the greater portion of (he stock. The fire next attacked the shop and dwelling of Mr O'Neill, which also, along with the detached outhouses, was quickly lowered to the ground Through tho united efforts of the public tbe fire was confined to tho buildings mentioned. The greatest excitement prevailed in the township, it being feared at one time that other buildings in the vicinity of the fire would be de atroyed. The origin is unknown, but it is believed to bo accidental and owing to a faulty chimney in the Olub Hotel. The firo damaged the telegraph line and interrupted oommuui cation North of Featherston.
