IT WAS NOT THE DEVIL.
Rowland Hill waa always annoyed when there happened to be any noise intho chapel, or when anything occurred to divert the attention of his hearers from what ho was Baying. On one occasion, a fow days before his death, ho waa poaching to one of the most crowded congr gations that over assembled to hoar him. In the middle of his discourse ho obaervrd a commotion in the gallery. For snmo time he took no notice of it, bat finding it increasing he pmsed in his sermon, and, looking iu the direction in which the confusion prevailed, ho exclaimed : “ What la the matter there ? The devil seems to have got among you.” A plain, countrylooking man immediately started to his feet, and addressing Mr Hill in reply, said : “.So, air, it arn’t the devil an is doing it ; it’ a fat lady wot’s 'fainted ; and she's a werry fat ’nn, sir, as don’t eeem likely to come to again in a hurry." “ Oh, that’s it, is it ? " Deserved Mr Hill, drawing his hand across bis chin, 11 then I beg the lady’s pardon — and the devil’s too.”
