“ OTHELLO.”
Last night "Othello” was given with a cast altogether differing from that with which it was played some short time back. Herr Bandmaun took lugo, Mr Oathcart Othello, and Mr Reynolds Oas.no. It cannot be said that the effect of this alteration was an improvement. The actors not being so well -fitted to the parts which were allotted to them, the result was that the play, as a whole, suffered considerably. In the first place, Mr Oathcart was somewhat over-weighted with the role of Othello. There was wanting that suppressed power which Herr Bandmann gave to the character, and although Mr Cathcart’s abilities as an elocutionist and a faithful interpreter of the “Divine William” are undoubted, yet the part of Othello requires exceptional force in order that the horror of the climax may be worked out to its lull extent. Harr Bandmann, on the contrary, made rather too much of the part of lago. Ha appeared to dominate the incidents in a manner which made ono wonder why ho took the trouble of platting at all, and why he did not put his foot down and do exactly as he liked without further bother. That Herr Bandmann’s impersonation was not good we do not mean at all to imply—on the contrary, it was very clever—but it stood out uncomfortably. Mr Reynolds made an excellent Oassio, though he could not bo expected to improve upon Mr Hull, who on the previous occasion had filled this part moat efficiently. Mr Hall had but little to do ao Brabantio, but did that little well. Miss Beaudet’s Desdemona was as charming as over, and she completely carried the audience with her. Taken as a whole the play passed off successful, but, as stated above, the change in the cast was anything but un improvement. To-night the highly sensational play of “ The Duke’s Motto ” will bo given.
