BOARD OF EDUCATION.
A meeting of this Board was held yesterday afternoon, half-an-hour after the proper time. Present —Mr Inglis (ohairman), Mr Cunningham, and Mr Montgomery. The statement of business done by the chairman since last meeting was read and approved. The Chairman stated that applications from matrioulated students had been received for the £6O scholarships offered for past pupil teachers. The scholarships in question, he pointed out, were only intended for old pupil teachers who determined to continue the avocation of tuition.
Some disoussion took place in reference to the matter, during whioh it was suggested to give the applicants £45 scholarships, and the Secretary suggested that the same point might arise in the ease of senior scholarships. The Ohairman remarked that there were in all twenty-three applications, and only two scholarships. The Secretary stated that he had made enquiries, and knew that nine of the applicants had passed creditably. After considering the matter, the Board decided to grant scholarships to May-no and Bobinson, on the chairman being satisfied as to their oertifioates.
The Board arrived at the conclusion, with reference to the Junior Scholarships, that the competitors must attend the Normal School, by the conditions imposed. An application from the Wairau committee for lodging allowance was declined. In reference to a letter of complaint from the master of the Loburn school, in which he asked for a further inspection of his school, that already reported not being in his opinion satisfactory or just, the Board resolved to reply that there would be another inspection in due courso, and that they were not prepared to depart from the routine of the department. Mrs Paterson wrote applying for a grant for instructing pupil teachers in sewing. _ The application wus postponed for further information.
A circular was received from the Government forwarding notices issued in connection with the Penny Savings Bank scheme. The election of a School Commissioner and two members of the Ashburton High School wan deferred till next meeting. The Chairman referred to that portion of the medical officer's report on school crowding. He (the chairman) remarked that this was really a question for the committees. The committees had the management of the schools.
Mr Montgomery hoped the medical officer would read up the Act of Parliament, and see who was responsible. There was nothing to reply to. The Chairman said it (the report) was not sent officially, lut under civer to him. 'I he question of insurances and another matter previously brought before the Board woro understood to be postponed. A number of mattors cf routine, sueh as requirements in connection with sehool acocmmedation, were dealt with. At five o'clock the Board west icta sommittee, and on resuming adjourned.
