LATE CABLE NEWS.
[Br TeDBQBAPH.J [Per s.s. Wakatipu, at Wellington.J LONDON. March 7. A terribly destructive eartbqn ike has occurred at Ischia, in the Gulf of Naples an island containing a population of 24,000. The shock was felt chiefly in the esp ial of the island. A hundred houses were tot.illy ruined, and many mi re wore greatly damaged. The number of persons killed so far as has been yet ascertained exceeds a hundred, and a great many have been seriously injured. The scenes witnessed are described ns awful, the inhabitants being paralysed with agony and terror. March 8_ The authorities h-.ve determined to stringently enforce the provisions of the Irish Coercion Act. Forty arrests have already been made, and it has been decided to apply the provisions of the A ct first to tho counties of Galway, Mayo, and Kerry. A second earthquake has occurred at the Island of Ischia, and is reported to be more violent and destruciive than the first. There has been a further appalling destruction to life and property, and a number of shipping disasters. It is estimated that at least a hundred persona have been killed by the second shock. The inhabitants of tho island are in a condition of frenzied terror.
