The Property Tax. The Property Tax officers inform me that the total amount of Property Tax received up to the closing of the ofilceslthroughout the colony last night was £76,498. The respective sums contributed by the various districts were as follows : Canterbury, £19,249 j Wellington, £17,027 ; Auckland, £14,623 : Otago, £12,400; Hawke’s Bay, £5215; Nelson, £2989 ; Southland, £2756 ; Waitaki, £2244 ; total, £76,498. It will be seen that Wellington stands second to Canterbury heading both Auckland and Otago by a large sum. The comparatively small amount paid by Otago seems strange at first sight, but probably this apparent anomaly may prove susceptible of ready explanation when all the circumstances become known. The second instalment is not due until the 22nd inst., but a large sum will still be required for the Colonial Treasurer’s estimate, £300,000, to be reaohed.
