RANGIORA FLOWER SHOW.

The exhibition opened in the Literary Institute on Thursday of plants, flowers, fruit, and vegetables formed about one of the best shows which has been held in this town. The staging was carried out by Messrs Nairn and Son, the cut blooms along one side and the fruit opposite, the pot plants being ranged on a table down the centre. The end of the hall was given up to the display of vegetables, whilst the stage was devoted to a display of pot plants and extra fruit and vegetables. The exhibits of Messrs Robson, Witchell, Ogden, and Hunnibell were very fine. In fruit the exhibits of sixty-three named varieties of apples by Mr W. E. Ivory, and a similar number by Mr J. Josling were highly creditable, and with the exhibits of Mr Pring, showed the state of perfection to which the growing of apples may be brought. Mr Josling showed thirty-five kinds of pears, but the best were shown by Mr T, Keir. There were several lots of very fine potatoes shown, and some mangolds. The display of culinary vegetables was fairly good. Dr Downes sent a variety of well grown marrows, and Mr Pole two large pumpkins. In cut blooms the geraniums of Mr Robson showed great care in their growth. Mr Howard excelled in marigolds, and the Hon. H. B. Gresson’s phlox drummondi specimens were certainly noticed by everyone. The best of the bouquets was one made by Mrs Wigney, which was decidedly a gem. Mr J. T. Brown was an exhibitor of roses of fine kinds. Mrs Tribe gained a prize for preserved fruit of a superior kind. Mr Ivory showed a basket of Victoria, Hamburg, or Frankentbal grapes, the berries of which were nearly as large as an Orleans plum, being very full and well fleshed. The grapes were grown at his house, Cashel street east, and the vine from which they were taken is one of the finest in the province. This year it is estimated to produce at least 3owt. of grapes. The arrangements made by the hon. secretary, who seems to have a concise knowledge of his duties wore perfect. After which, a number of toasts were given and speeches made referring to the progress of horticulture and floriculture in the district generally.

OXFOED HOETICULTUEAL AND POULTEY ASSOCIATION. The autumn show under the auspices of this association was held in the East Oxford Town Hall on Tuesday, Bth inst. The hall was very tastefully decorated with tree ferns and ferns of various descriptions, and the walls were hung with very nice pictures. The thanks of the public are duo to the committs-), and especially to the indefatigable secretary Mr Mardon, for the arrangements, which were in every case most satisfactory. During the day Mr Hunnibell’fl band en-

livened the proceedings with its dulcet melodies. The exhibits, although not extensive, were very good, and as some of the judges remarked, would compare very favorably with similar exhibits in Christchurch. Some of the exhibits were disqualified through the inattention of the exhibitor in not complying with the printed condition as to quantity, &o. Class A. — Pot Grown Plants. Open to amateurs only.
